Reports

How workers tell their orchestrator they are done, stuck or need input with tallpine report.

View on GitHub

A report is a short message from a worker session to its orchestrator. Workers file reports with tallpine report; the orchestrator reads them as they arrive and decides what to do. A report does not change the session's state, create an orchestrator, or claim a PR.

tallpine report must run inside a worker session, because it needs TALLPINE_SESSION_ID.

States

Pick one state flag and always add --note:

FlagUse it when
--checkpointA meaningful milestone is done and work continues.
--needs-inputA decision or missing input blocks progress. This is the report an orchestrator must act on.
--stuckWork cannot proceed for another reason.
--doneThe assigned work is complete.
tallpine report --checkpoint --note "Parser rewritten; tests next"
tallpine report --needs-input --note "Which of the two migration orders do you want?"
tallpine report --done --note "Focused tests pass" --pr-created https://github.com/acme/app/pull/42

A plain tallpine report "free-form text" also works. Do not combine free-form text with a state or output flag. Text and notes are limited to 1000 characters.

Attach outputs

FlagAttaches
--pr-created <url>A GitHub pull request or GitLab merge request you opened. Use a full URL.
--pr-reviewed <url>A pull request you reviewed. Use a full URL.
--artifact <reference>A deliverable such as a document. Repeatable.

The state and the outputs are independent. Attaching a PR does not mean the work is done.

File follow-ups

--defer "<line>" files a follow-up you will not do now as an inbox item in the project backlog. It is repeatable, with at most three lines per report and 1 to 200 characters each.

Delivery

Every report is eligible for delivery as soon as it is filed, including checkpoints and done reports. An idle orchestrator wakes. A busy Chat orchestrator keeps the report in a durable outbox until it can take it, without being forced to run concurrently. A stuck report may interrupt or combine with other reports.

A done report with no pushed PR behind it is marked unverified when it is delivered. The five-minute settlement window only gives the SCM observer time to see the PR before that mark is applied; it does not delay delivery.

In a project with lanes, a worker's reports go to the orchestrator that owns its lane.

Automatic reports

Lines marked [auto] were written by the daemon, not by the worker, and are not framed as worker text. Examples:

  • [auto] review_approved and [auto] review_failed after a review pass.
  • Notices when a worker's turn ends, its agent exits or fails to start, needs authentication, or is waiting for input.
  • An idle check sent to a worker whose turn ended and who filed no tallpine report. It waits TALLPINE_WORKER_IDLE_NUDGE (a Go duration, default 10m, minimum 1m, or off) and reminds the worker to run tallpine report.
